When will retailers learn to take better care of their customers’ data?

Retail Knowledge’s founder Paul Bessant spotted a lucky draw at the end of the counter in a Starbucks next to the King Power stadium in Leicester on Thursday.

Left there under the watchful eye of no one in particular was a jar full of business cards with a handwritten message beside it:

“Win a £10 Gift Card by leaving your business card!”

“The place was empty,“ says Paul, “and there must have been 100+ business cards, anyone of which a fraudster could have called up and said “I’m calling to say congratulations you have won the competition, give me your address and I’ll post you the prize / bank details… I’ll make the transfer” etc etc.

“Now they know where you work, and where you live … well we all know how the rest of it plays out!

Delegates arriving for the Retail Risk conference at the King Power stadium next Thursday are advised not to enter the draw.
